As more and more surveys around the world show the massive increase in levels of obesity in countries such as the UK and the US, many people are actually being forced to seek weight loss surgery as a way to regain control of their lives and give themselves a boost. However, while many people see these clinical procedures as necessities others see them as a form of cosmetic surgery – so which definition is true?
While the term cosmetic surgery will probably prompt thoughts of a procedure which is optional and often carried out to increase a person’s visible appearance, weight loss surgery comes in so many different forms. Nowadays there are a whole host of different stages which you need to complete before you would even be considered for weight loss surgery, it is not just a case of booking in and going under the “surgeon’s knife”.
Any weight loss surgeon who is properly qualified will under take a number of interviews with a patient to see if surgery is actually the correct route for them and there are no more alternatives they can attempt. Indeed there may well be situations where a person’s weight has become so out of control that it can be dangerous to operate on them prior to them actually dieting and losing some weight naturally.
Over the last few years we have seen clinical procedures such as gastric bypass surgery and lap band surgery increase in popularity. These are physical measures which physical reduce the size of the stomach, therefore reducing the amount of food which can be eaten. In basic terms it will make the patient feel “full” after eating significantly less food than prior to the operation. As and when the person has reached their target weight, options such as the band can easily be removed, but obviously the person would need to restrain themselves from their earlier eating patterns.
In reality weight loss surgery is more of a necessity than an option for many, and the results can be amazing!
